AMPEGGIO MONOS IN DETAIL

Ampeggio Monobloc Amps (Black Edition)

Our Monoblocks return in 2019 as The Black Edition

Our fourth revision of this acclaimed set of amps continues the tradition of pin-drop quiet noise floors and hand-crafted circuit designs. The sonic backgrounds are just as pitch black as the new two-tier aluminum shroud that protects the sensitive tubes and circuitry.

Most Voxativ loudspeakers do not need much more than two watts of amplification to really sing. Remember, the average Voxativ loudspeaker has a minimum efficiency of 100dB. The 18 single-ended watts of these monobloc amplifiers can fill a concert hall and still sound gigantic.

Most amplifiers on the market are not made with low enough noise/hum levels to effectively drive our loudspeakers. This new revision to the amp circuitry is absolutely quiet and especially tuned for the needs of our high-efficiency full-range/wideband drivers.

This level of quiet — pure black in both name and sound — can only be realized by a clever new circuit design from the mind of Voxativ’s chief electronics engineer Stefan Noll.

In addition to this new quiet design, the relaunched version for 2019 will also sport smooth sounding output transformers and chokes that are specially manufactured by Voxativ. Furthermore all wiring is now silver, tube heating is DC, the interior and exterior binding posts are cast from pure copper.

This new Black Edition to the Voxativ family was born in Berlin and raised in Fulda, Germany.

SIT-1 Power Amplifier – $10,000 / pr

The SIT-1 is the first of a new generation of power amplifiers using Static Induction Transistors (SIT) in single-stage, single-ended Class A circuits delivering superlative sound without feedback or degeneration. This is made possible by the unique characteristic of First Watt’s custom SIT devices, which combines a square-law input character with a low impedance output to form the only solid state gain device which behaves like a Triode tube.

This character has long been sought as a potential replacement for tubes, but the realized devices have several advantages. The Pass SIT device has higher gain and lower distortion and also conveniently operates at the voltages and currents required by loudspeakers. This means that an output transformer, with all its bandwidth and distortion limitations is eliminated.

The owner’s manual can be downloaded in pdf format here: SIT-1 Owner’s Manual

You can read more about SITs here: SIT Introduction

The SIT-1 has only one active device in the circuit. All the other components are passive, as illustrated in the following diagram:

In this circuit, the signal is presented at the Gate of the SIT and appears at the output with a voltage gain of about 18 dB. The input impedance is about 47000 ohms, and the output impedance is about 4 ohms, or a current gain of about 10,000 to 1.

There are other amplifiers which operate without negative feedback loops for the purpose of improving performance, but it is a poorly understood fact that the bulk of them use degeneration on the gain devices to improve the performance, which is widely regarded as just another form of feedback.

The SIT-1 uses neither loop negative feedback nor degeneration. As a result, the sound of the amplifier entirely reflects the character and chosen operating point of this single device. It is no exaggeration to say that the amplifier speaks with a single voice. Nevertheless the measured performance is quite good compared to the single-ended tube circuits (SETs) operated with multiple stages and feedback:

The distortion is second harmonic in character, and this is constant across the audio band. The frequency response is flat from 1.5 Hz to 200 Khz. The amplifier operates at 200 watts, and is designed to operate with loads from 4 ohms to 16 ohms.

Because the unique character of the SIT device is a function of the voltage/current values (“load-line”) it experiences with a load, the SIT-1 amplifier has been equipped with an adjustment to help optimize the performance with different loudspeakers. A knob on the front panel is used to tweak the operating point of the gain device as indicated by a meter display. It is this feature which further distinguishes the monoblock SIT-1 from the stereo SIT-2, as it allows the last bit of performance refinement.

It’s interesting to try to describe the effect of this amplifier on the performance of high sensitivity loudspeakers. The sound is fast but very smooth, with a very organic, musical character. The spatial presentation is very three dimensional, with exceptional localization. You will find it easy to “drill down” so as to focus on individual instruments in an ensemble. Also, the amplifier appears to have more power than it’s rating suggests, as the overdriven characteristic is very soft.

A typical critical comment:

The amp sounds “big”. There is a large, open sound stage that fills the room, that is the first thing that you notice when the amp is plugged in. The effect is a little intoxicating. …the SIT seems to bring a lot more control & detail to the speaker. The tube sweetness is present, yet the presentation is very clean. This is like a very nice low distortion SET. The SIT presents details, but with proper dynamic contrast. Details do not poke you in the eye, they just naturally unfold as part of the music.

You can also read some commentary describing the prototype SIT-2 in 6moons.

SIT-2 Stereo Amp – $5,000

SIT-2 Power Amplifier

The SIT-2 is the first of a new generation of power amplifiers using Static Induction Transistors (SIT) in single-stage, single-ended Class A circuits delivering superlative sound without feedback or degeneration. This is made possible by the unique characteristic of First Watt’s custom SIT devices, which combines a square-law input character with a low impedance output to form the only solid state gain device which behaves like a Triode tube.

The Pass SIT device has higher gain and lower distortion and also conveniently operates at the voltages and currents required by loudspeakers. This means that an output transformer, with all its bandwidth and distortion limitations is eliminated.

You can download the owner’s manual here: SIT-2 Owner’s Manual

You can read more about SITs here: SIT Introduction

The gain of the SIT-2 is the result of the single gain device in the circuit, the Pass SIT transistor. The other semiconductors form a nearly constant current source, as illustrated in the following diagram:

In this circuit, the signal is presented at the Gate of the SIT and appears at the output with a voltage gain of about 18 dB. The input impedance is about 47000 ohms, and the output impedance is about 4 ohms, or a current gain of about 10,000 to 1.

There are other amplifiers which operate without negative feedback loops for the purpose of improving performance, but it is a poorly understood fact that the bulk of them use degeneration on the gain devices to improve the performance, which is widely regarded as just another form of feedback.

The SIT-2 uses neither loop negative feedback nor degeneration.

The character of the SIT device is a function of the voltage/current values (“load-line”) it experiences with a load and the SIT-2 amplifier has been adjusted for most optimal sound in the region around 8 ohms.

J2  Stereo Amp$4,000

First Watt J2

J2 Power Amplifier

The J2 is a stereo power amplifier rated at 25 watts per channel. It has a two-stage circuit that operates in pure single-ended Class A mode, with signal JFET devices forming the input stage and power JFET devices for the output stage.

JFET transistors have long been recognized as having the highest audio quality of any transistor; the input devices of the J2 are known through the industry as the standard for low noise and linearity, and are found on the inputs of the finest phono stages, line level preamplifiers, and power amplifiers.

But for over 30 years robust power JFETs have not been widely available since the short-lived efforts of Sony and Yamaha. In the last few months, advances in Silicon Carbide (SiC) technology have resulted in new power JFET transistors with high voltage, current, and power capabilities – as high as 1200 volts, 30 amps, and 273 watts.

Created by SemiSouth Corporation of Mississippi, these robust new JFETs are designed for very fast high power switching in solar power and electric car applications. However, they also have a very low distortion characteristic that makes them superb for use in linear amplifiers. In apples-to-apples comparisons with comparable MOSFET type power transistors, they can achieve 10 to 20 dB improvements in distortion performance.

For over 10 years First Watt has been pushing the design envelope with simple high performance Class A amplifier circuits, and when a better transistor like this comes along, it can mean getting the same distortion performance with a lot less feedback, or lower distortion with the same amount of feedback. The J2 does amplifier does both, and that helps make it a better sounding amplifier than the best of its predecessors.

F7  Stereo Amp – $3,000

F7 Power Amplifier

The F7 is a very unique power amplifier, a two-stage push-pull JFET/MOSFET

topology with fewer parts than any First Watt amplifier to date and incorporating

a very interesting balance of very low negative voltage feedback and a little bit of

positive current feedback to give an astonishing measure of control over reactive

loudspeaker loads.

The F7 is now in production.

The owner’s manual can be downloaded here: F7 Owner’s Manual

Here is a link to the first of many reviews: F7 at 6moons

Availability is March 2016 at a list price of $3000.

F6 Stereo Amp$3,000

F6 Power Amplifier

The F6 is a very interesting amplifier, first designed in 2012 and presented in October at the Burning Amp Festival in San Francisco. The transcript of my presentation there is available on the First Watt website under articles –

F6 Talk at Burning Amp Festival 2012

and contains numerous comments and details about the original design, some of which are repeated here.

The amplifier was not initially slated for commercial production, and I continued to refine the design over the course of the next year and a half, working with different parts and adjustment values until both I and my listeners were satisfied that I had gotten the most out of this topology.

You can read the owner’s manual here: F6 Owner’s Manual

I think you will find that both pieces contain some interesting observations about sound and design.

The F6 will become available this month (June 2014) and has a list price of $3500.

X350.8 350 watt per channel stereo – $14,200

At 350 watts per channel class A/B, the X350.8 is the largest and most powerful stereo power amplifier of Pass Labs line-up. Because we care more about how holistic design affects the musical experience and relatively less about how parts affect specifications, you can expect superb and accurate representation of the recording performance and venue, as well as the distinctive layering of instruments captured faithfully.

X150.8 150 watt per channel stereo – $6,750

As the entry-level class A/B stereo power .8 amplifier, the X150.8 features many of the same technical and sonic attributes of its larger brethren. It features 150 watts per channel, 100K ohm input impedance and operates “higher” into Class A than its predecessors. But knowing the ear is not a microphone and the brain is not a tape recorder, we’ve designed this model to bridge the gap between measured performance and outstanding subjective musical experience. Simply put, the X150.8 will compel you to listen to your entire music collection again and again.

XA Series

Class A

Entering their 22nd year of production, the X and XA power amplifiers have remained at the cutting edge of audio through continuous innovation and refinement. At Pass we build amplifiers with excessive output stages, huge heat sinks and massive power supplies. We use the highest quality components in simple linear topologies, assembled and tested with great care in Auburn, California. They measure well and sound great. They are heavy, reliable and expensive.

Awards and Reviews

“As I listened to album after album, I could hear the textures, colors, tones, and harmonics of music in a way that was very moving. The system’s timbre realism with individual instruments and voices was as satisfying with the XA25 as it had been with any amp. All of this added up to enable my system to play music with a wonderful lifelike flow.” Jack Roberts

INT-250 250 watt Integrated – $12,000

Like the INT-60, the INT-250 utilizes the synergies developed in the .8 series power amplifiers. Unlike the INT-60, however, it brings 250 watts per channel of listening pleasure. With higher power MOSFETs and more of them, the INT-250 drives large, demanding and relatively inefficient loudspeakers at higher volumes without batting an eyelash, singing beautifully. Just incredible music from one component.

INT-60 60 watt Integrated – $9,000

INT-60_on_desk

This integrated amplifier sets a new benchmark in significantly narrowing any perceived performance gap between separate components and integrated amplifiers. Advanced technologies and real-world testing combine to create the INT-60 which presents 60 glorious watts per channel into 8 ohms, and doesn’t leave class A until 30 watts thanks to its high-bias operation. This larger class A operating envelope brings lower distortion and greater loudspeaker control, delivering higher quality musical fidelity for your enjoyment.

Awards and Reviews

So what does the INT-60 sound like? I’m sure this is too simplistic, but it sounds like music.

Positive-Feedback

“Distilling it all down, it’s an amplifier that makes me happy because it gets me more involved and closer to the musical experience.”

Part-Time Audiophile

“The INT-60’s dominant trait was to suck me in and glue me to my seat as it continued to reproduce music with so much low-key flavor, natural color, and more-ishness that I could never play just one record and go to bed early. ”

“if you want to hear beautiful music produced by an integrated amplifier that is built to last a life time and is one handsome-looking beast without constantly messing with your system, the Pass Labs INT-60 integrated amplifier is for you.”

HomeTheaterReview.com

“The INT-60, indeed, is one of the best sounding integrated preamp/amplifiers I have ever reviewed. It is tough to better the INT-60 with separates in this price range. Even if you spend a bit more, you probably will not top it. Incredible detail, width and depth in the expansive stereo image, plus quick bass response.” John Gatski

Headphone Amp

HPA-1 SE Headphone Amplifier – $3,500

Class A

Announcing the new Headphone Amp from Pass Labs!

Like the XP preamplifiers, the HPA-1 is the result of great attention to detail.

Starting at the power cord, the AC line is first filtered for high frequency noise and then isolated by a special toroidal transformer shielded by mu-metal for lower magnetic noise and shielded for electrostatic noise by a separate Faraday shield, grounded to analog ground. This is followed by fast/soft recovery rectifiers, generous CRC passive filtering and sophisticated discreet DC regulators and then more passive RC filters.

Works with headphones
with impedances of 15 ohms to 600 ohms

Low feedback wide bandwidth discreet design.

Class A
direct coupled Mosfet output stage

Custom low noise Torodial power transformer
with a Farady shield

Discreet regulated power supply for audio circuits.

The HPA-1 headphone amplifier was designed ground-up to become what we believe is one of the very best sounding headphone amplifiers available today. With low feedback, wide bandwidth and a direct coupled MOSFET output stage, this musical instrument drives even the most difficult headphone loads with ease, power and grace. The HPA-1 also functions as a line-level preamplifier that sonically rivals much higher-priced competition. The measured performance is superb and the sound even better.

Awards and Reviews

“To put it bluntly, Pass Labs HPA-1 is an exceptional, very addictive headamp/preamp combo every aficionado should at least audition once an opportunity strikes.”

HiFi Knights

” If I did not know that the HPA-1 was transistor-based, I would’ve been fooled: the HPA-1 had the natural warmth and slight fullness that mimic tubes.” ” In my view, headphone listening is about intimacy, and the HPA-1 is nearly perfect in this regard.”

HometheaterReview.com

“As far as headphones go, the HPA-1 is a brilliant amp which deserves every bit of praise I’ve thus far heaped on it.”
