MIT’s Power Conditioning Products:

MIT’s Z Power Conditioning patented AC power filtering technology is engineered to operate in parallel to the current flow, never in series like most other “power filters” do today. A series filter works by blocking, or rejecting certain types of noise. Imagine a series filter working by ‘shutting a door’ in the face of noisy pollutants. What happens to the noise after the door is closed? Since noise is energy, it cannot be destroyed; it must be consumed to be removed. So, when a series filter blocks or rejects unwanted noise, it simply reflects the noise right back to the source. The noise has not been removed, only reflected. This type of filter cannot rid itself of noise, as the noise is continually reflected between the series filter and the source, again and again.

In comparison the Z Power Conditioning uses patented parallel “AC Filterpoles”™; a tuned LCR technology. This technology eliminates reflections by efficiently absorbing all forms of AC noise on the mains, and then converting it into harmless thermal heat. The result? What are Filterpoles?

‘In comparison Poles of Attenuation (Referenced in The Impedance Domain) A properly built AC filter will not only attenuate un-wanted noise on the AC powerline, but it will also optimize the power factor. Power Factor is a (dimensionless) number between 0 and 1. When power factor is equal to 0, the energy flow is entirely reactive, and stored energy in the load returns to the source on each cycle. When the power factor is 1, all the energy supplied by the source is consumed by the load and nothing is reflected back to the source. MIT was awarded a patent on this technology regarding audio in July 13, 1993: number 5,227,962.

The best way to attenuate unwanted noise is to create a very low impedance (a zero of impedance across the load which acts as an attenuation pole to the noise) surrounding the frequency (or frequencies) of the undesirable noise. In the case of audio, that would be at any frequency other than the powerline frequency. This is best accomplished by placing a tuned circuit in parallel, around the load. MIT was awarded this patent in November 9, 1993: number 5,260,862.

2C3D Logo2C3D is a technology pioneered by Bruce Brisson of MIT Cables. As the name suggests, 2C3D is an engineered solution that creates a believabl three-dimensional soundstage from a two-channel system. 2C3D technology provides the optimal balance between timbre, detail, imaging and soundstage. With this technology it becomes simple to identify individual instruments and voices within a defined, natural and lifelike soundstage – at any volume level. Until now, this could only be provided by MIT line level interfaces or MIT speaker interfaces.

The 2C3D Power Management Console provides the ability to tune the incoming power to help produce an emotional experience, like we get while listening to live music; similar to a full-body immersive experience. From the improved management of incoming power, the live “feel” of a musical performance is achieved as if you were present in the same air and space as the original event as it was unfolding. The PMC dashboard includes 2 separate 2C3D switches to tune and enhance this visceral experience.

Power Factor Correction

Power Factor Correction LogoIn a simple and general sense, Power Factor describes how much power is sent to the load versus how much power is returned to the supply. Specifically, in AC circuits, Power Factor is the ratio of the “real power” (used to do work) and the “apparent power” (that is supplied to the circuit). The PMC includes two switches marked as “PFC 1” and “PFC 2” used to engage proprietary circuits designed to offer additional control of the Power Factor.

Users will have varying experiences with these settings and may find one setting is better than another at different times of the day. This is due to other electrical influences that may be present only at certain times. For most systems, one setting may be found that provides maximum benefit for the most commonly used periods of the day or evening.

The “Chain of Custody” is what recording engineers worry about the most; after every session they worry “..did I capture all of it? Will the recording translate the event to the vinyl or CD? Will the chain be complete? The same goal is true when assembling a world class playback system for a similar purpose; to transport us back to the original event without a loss in translation.

In your system, The Chain of Custody begins at the wall where AC drives your source component. If the power is bad at the source, the chain is broken at the very first link. Z Powerbar II—MIT introduces an all new “Audiophile Grade” energy distribution system with noise devouring filters plus dual switches to enable additional tuning of PFC (Power Factor Correction). As changing digital formats emerge with higher and higher sampling rates, clocking frequencies and data correction frequencies a litany of new pollution is rendering older filtration techniques useless to the modern Audiophile. This high frequency noise bothered MIT engineers enough to thoughtfully address this increasingly destructive problem: Dirty Power caused by noise insertion at higher and higher frequencies.

As you would expect, these additional parallel filters are strategically placed on bands that carry unwanted high frequency noise.

Power Factor can change over the period of the day. Also, your neighbors can inject noise into the power lines you share. Besides the additional filtration, the Z Powerbar II has two front mounted switches to adjust Power Factor to maximize efficiency.

By controlling a broader spectrum of line noise you will experience “blacker” blacks, better saturation of tones and colors and a deepening sense of detail in the shadows. Timbre is natural and space between instruments is enhanced by the lack of this destructive noise. As compared to the Original Z Powerbar, the Z Powerbar II is key to enabling the retrieval of spatial information needed to enhance the sense of “being there” and the ability to deliver “clean power” to allow every device connected to reach its full potential.

PFC SwitchesIsolation is the latest feature included in the Z Powerbar II. This is achieved by new Hospital grade ISO duplexes and discreet internal wiring to eliminate a “daisy chain” that serves to minimize or eliminate “cross talk”. When audio devices create and insert their own noises, isolation is the answer.
