DAVONE

the World of Davone

Creating a new audio system from scratch is not an easy thing to do; it can be both exciting and challenging. We work around the clock creating. With craftsmanship, design and audio in our DNA, Davone is a place where new ideas unfold and are brought to life in our own hands-on production.

Davone Reference One

No compromise. Is the best way to describe the new Davone flagship model. With precise engineering guiding us every step of the way, we have created a loudspeaker that reveals the full tonal spectrum of even the most convoluted music. Sounding clean, natural and unconstrained, hidden subtleties in the music are revealed while always remaining in control.

  • More than BerylliumDue to its incredible rigidity, Beryllium represents the ultimate material for a tweeter dome. Where soft domes turn choirs into grain, hard rock into noise, Beryllium can separate the complex harmonics with ease and keep the music clean and precise, also at high listening levels. But only if applied correctly. With the very narrow surround on our tweeter, the “soft dome” coloration is kept to a minimum. And with a moving mass of only 0.1 gram and a magnetic flux density of 2.0 Tesla, we are right at the theoretical limit. To translate these extreme specifications into extreme performance, the application needs to be optimal too. With the dedicated cross-over, movement of the dome is kept to a minimum, thereby eliminating distortion in the lower treble, often referred to as the undesired “bite”. And by lavishly rounding the baffle, the uniquely flush mounted dome can unobstructed deliver its wide off-axis response, essential for an open sound.

  • A Metamodal MembraneThe Swedish company Oxeon invented a unique process to produce a very flat uni-directonal fiber tape. A weave made with this tape can be very flat and therefore requires less resin and weighs less compared to a traditional fiber weave. In other words, more carbon fibers can be used for the same weight. In fact, Textreme as it is called, is so stiff that the familiar edge resonance around 1-2 kHz is eliminated. This stiffness usually comes at the cost of severe resonances at higher frequencies which limits the operating range. But by optimising the thickness and stiffness, the Textreme membrane is engineered for a controlled resonant behaviour by distributing the break up modes, a metamodal membrane. These distributed modes, or resonances, are far less severe and the useable frequency range is increased. It is the perfect membrane for a midrange loudspeaker and it allows us to use a higher cross over between mid range and tweeter. The sound is resonant free and wonderfully clean, neutral and fast.

  • Fast and PowerfulEven the untrained eye will be able to see that this is not just another 10″ woofer. It is purpose built for large deflection with minimal energy storage. In other words, it is powerful, fast and detailed. The strikingly large double magnet is mounted on a very stiff cast aluminum chassis and both magnet and chassis are designed for optimum airflow and ventilation. This minimises unwanted energy storage, just like the non-conducting vented voice coil and low damping rubber surround. The large surround and long voice coil allow a very high mechanical deflection of 22mm and a special designed spider limits the mechanical excursion when the woofer reaches the maximum deflection. The very high currents needed to bring this woofer close to its maximum require the large area of the 3” voice coil for sufficient cooling.

the Colour of Sound

String instruments create a base tone and a very large set of higher harmonics. They are proof that the human ear likes a rich, harmonic sound. Record players and tube amplifiers also add harmonics and we experience this as a vibrant and colourful addition, just like the right room acoustics can be. Most loudspeakers also add colour. Aluminium tweeters can have a very open, clear and transparent sound. But this pleasant colouring of sound can be overshadowing and lead to a timbre poverty. Tones are masked by the added colour. The natural sounding Beryllium tweeter in the Reference One has a softer percussion presentation. It is better in distinguishing tones, has better micro details reproduction and therefore musical instruments are better separated in space. Likewise, the Textreme Carbon mid range has a smooth and balanced timbre. It reveals the micro-texture of sound without adding colour. Hence, where drivers based on more basic materials like aluminium or paper can sound attractive with relatively simple music such as classical guitar or vocal solos, the Beryllium and Textreme Carbon drivers do not have that limitation. The Reference One will reveal the full tonal spectrum of even the most convoluted music.

from Stereo to Multiroom

With the new Meander all-in-one Wi-Fi loudspeaker and our WISA wirelessamplifier module, a clean integration of a Davone sound system in your smart home is easier than ever before. Or if like to improve your existing audio system, Davone also features a full range of non-amplified loudspeakers like the Twist.

every Bit of Music

At Davone we like to create. But we do not limit ourselves to one craft. We believe that a printed circuit board channeling bits into music is beautiful in it’s own right. Creativity comes in many shapes and forms in the world of Davone.

Two kinds of Wireless

Streaming music from the internet over WiFi is the best known form of wireless audio. The Davone Meander all in one music system uses this technology, delivering a unique music experience. Stereo reproduction from two seperate WiFi loudspeakers is however limited because the independent music downloads to both loudspeakers can not be timed perfectly, leading to audible shifts in stereo imaging.

WiSA is an alternative form of wireless audio that enables perfect timing for not only stereo, but also multichannel. But WiSA is not connected to the internet. It basically replaces the loudspeaker cable with a wireless transmitter and a wireless receiver, which is build into the loudspeaker. A source of music needs to be connected to the WiSA wireless transmitter before you can enjoy high quality stereo wirelessly.

Davone Wireless Module

Fully developed in-house, our WiSA wireless amplifier module can transform the Studio, Twist and Solo into superior wireless loudspeakers. But even though WiSA wireless only replaces the loudspeaer cable, the Davone wireless module has the amplifiers build into the loudspeaker. This means the analog cross-over can be replaced with a more accurate digital cross-over. This filters the signal before it goes into the amplifiers. Now the amplifiers only have to amplify the filtered signal and they can be connected directly to the individual drivers. Compared to analog speakers you will quickly hear more control, more dynamics and more silence.

What do you need?

Unlike streaming music directly from the internet over WiFi, WiSA enables a high quality stereo or multichannel wireless audio system. WiSA wireless is not connected to the internet so you need to connect a music source to the WISA wireless transmitter like for example the SoundSend, to for example a WiFi music streamer from Bluesound, Sonos or Heos. Now you are all set for high quality stereo music streaming. For a detailed WiSA transmitter feature overview read this

Technology

Room Filling Sound

The Meander drivers, cross over and baffle angle have been chosen cafefully to deliver a room filling sound with minimal changes in the frequancy response with listening position:

The tweeter that is used in the Meander is a so called dome tweeter. This type of tweeter does not beam the sound as much as other tweeter constructions like ribbon or horn tweeters do. Also, it is made of aluminium which has better off-axes response than other popular materials like silk, beryllium or even diamond for the same size. At 60 degrees and 10 kHz, the sound level is only -6dB (red line, tweeter mounted on infinite baffle) which is excellent compared to most other tweeters. This small drop in level is easily compensated for with the digital cross-over. All this means that despite the upward pointed baffle you will still hear the direct radiated high frequencies when sitting in front of the Meander, like you would with a normal forward pointing loudspeaker. But the Meander does generate a larger portion indirect sound in comparison, giving a more ambiance rich, life-like sound when sitting in front and a more well balanced sound elsewhere in the room.

The 2 cones represent the left and right channel and indicate that the direct sound is not only travelling perpendicular to the baffle, but also forward, backward, left and right, thanks to the excellent sound spreading drivers and digital cross-over. In comparison, with lower quality drivers the cone would be more narrow, indicating less direct sound travelling to a seated position. For an optimal result the Meander needs to be placed close to hard walls such that the reflected sound can support the direct sound for quality listening elsewhere in the room.

the Magnetic Motor

All loudspeakers may look alike for the untrained eye. But to reduce cost, usually chassis are made from plastic, the magnet and voice coil are too small and the magnetic motor will be from simple, unoptimized geometry, to name a few. In contrast, take a look at the woofers that are used in the Meander that have been optimized for quality instead of cost:

The magnetic structure is optimised using advanced Finite Element Analysis software. The result is a magnetic field with a better than 95% symmetry within the voice coil travel range of +/-12 mm. Compared to traditional designs, the harmonic distortion is greatly reduced, especially at higher loudness levels

Large magnet structure with 39 mm heavy-duty fiber glass vented voice coil for better control, power handling, dynamic performance and low-level details

Copper cap on center pole to reduce voice coil inductance and to minimize variations in voice coil inductance as a function of voice coil position

Cone made of a paper/glass fiber mix with improved stability

Rigid die cast alu chassis with extensive venting for lower air flow speed reducing audible distortion

History

At the age of 14, Davone founder Paul Schenkel set out to improve the sound of his clock radio. He did so by connecting it to 4 home made loudspeakers with 8″ Philips wideband drivers, arranged in a quadraphonic setting. From then on Paul was hooked to audio and his loudspeakers quickly became more serious. Besides designing the occasional amplifier, Paul wrote his own MLS-based software to be able to do more accurate loudspeaker measurements. All while completing his successive studies in Aeronautics and Physics. After doing vibro-acoustic analyses at Philips, Paul started Davone in 2007, a natural extension of a already lifelong journey in high-end audio.

Rithm

Early 2005, a prototype was made of a loudspeaker that later would be called the Davone Rithm. Eager to break high-end audio traditions, the final Rithm was made from bend plywood with a timeless design and a high quality coaxial driver. The Rithm caused quite a stir both in and outside the audio industry, after its introduction at the CES in Las Vegas in 2008. Davone even got a Trekkies following due to the (coincidental) resemblance of the Rithm to the Star Trek logo. Nontheless, the Rithm laid the foundation of Davone having timeless design and the ability to satisfy the tastes of audiophiles. Several magazines, among other Stereo Japan, presented the Rithm on their cover.

the Birth of an Icon

How to follow a design as successfull as the Rithm? Many dealers were asking for a larger version of the Rithm. Which is only natural because model scaling is what all manufacturers do. But Davone is not one to follow traditions. The newly developed coaxial driver based on an 8″ woofer and 1″ forward positioned tweeter found an entirely new home. Tone magazine later wrote: “its single driver presents an unusually transparent view of the music. I just wish more speaker companies were coming up with such truly original designs”.

Ray

Named Ray after the cool Ray-Ban sun glasses, the Ray opened the doors to more international dealers. With it’s 20mm thick bend plywood cabinet, vibrations were kept to a minimum. The 20mm solid steel base provided a strong stance to deliver well controled and deep base. Later updates changed the Ray to a 3 way system, keeping the sound quality up to the latest standard and shaking many hard core audiophiles in their believes that all loudspeakers should look alike.

Small, yet Big

Next in line was a new large speaker, but development needed more time and little Mojo beat it to the punch. The Davone Mantra by now was such that each model had to be uniquely different from previous products. It had to sound good and look good. The idea for making an onmidirectional loudspeaker was suggested by one of our distributors. Small and powerful omnidirectional speakers with live-like, ambiance-rich sound did not exist at the time, so the decision was quickly made.

Mojo

Several cone designs were tested, different drivers tried out. Finally the right combination of drivers, cone characteristics and cross over, delivered 360 degrees quality sound over the entire frequency range. At the CES in 2012 people were talking in the hallway. How was it possible that such a small speaker played so well. “I was really blown away” did Stereophile write after visiting the room. the rest is history. The Mojo was to become Davone’s best selling speaker to date.

A complete line

During 2012-2014 the first Davone product line was completed. Five unique models were now in production and Davone had to find a new production location to manage the rapid expansion. The new location was found in Værløse, about 30km north of Copenhagen. Davone is still there today. Sales was now global, lead by dealers in the USA, South Korea, Japan and Europe.

Grande, Riva, Tulip

After two years development, the flagship model called Grande was ready and quickly found its first owners. With the strong bend wood panels and complex inner construction, a stiff cabinet was created with rounded corners for diffraction free sound, enabling the high quality drivers to deliver a detailed and open sound. The Tulip was also loved by many with its minimalistic looks and powerful and full range 2.5 way system from a small cabinet. The Riva only lived a short life due to production problems. It turns out that bend wood requires in depth knowledge of its strenghts and limitations in order to use it successfully with each design.

Next Generation

With time comes new insight and we used this to further improve the Davone product line. The High Resolution cross over had evolved and loudspeaker membranes were chosen with a more pistonic behaviour for a cleaner sound. Where the designs before were based on simple 2 dimensional bend wood, the next generation becomes more creative and 3 dimensional, as can be clearly seen in the Solo and more subtle in the Twist and Moxie.

Solo, Twist, Studio, Moxie

The Solo leads the pack and with the well controlled sound radiation, the bass reflex tuned for accuracy, the low resonance cabinet and the cross over tuned for neutrality. The Solo sounds “coherent with a correct tonal balance and harmony” as well summerized by Hi-Fi-Class. The Twist, Studio and Moxie exhibit the same characteristics and offer good value for money. Even though not many printed magazines exist anymore, the Solo was feutured on the cover of HVT magazine.

Wireless

We noticed that powered loudspeakers had become popular. No wonder. A DSP brings huge sound quality advantages and the combination with WiFI and streaming made active loudspeakers very attractive solutions. Being no stranger to electronics, Davone set out to develop its own wireless solutions based on WiSA technology. After an intensive development process of over two years, during which we performed many functional, reliability and blind listening tetst, we found the optimal solutions for the Davone loudspeakers.

Meander, Solo, Twist, Studio

The Meander was to become the first Davone speaker with WiFi build in, celebrating the event with it’s stunning yet functional design. The very good sound quality was noted by reviewers. The Meander had become a great allround product that we are very pround of. The WiSA solutions found their place in the Solo, Twist and Studio, further improving their sound quality and functionality. And the experiences with our DSP corrected loudspeakers was to be inspirational for further developments. For active as well as passive loudspeakers.

Present day

The quest for the best sound is never ending. Exploring new ideas with a lot of determination and passion is our routine. And with our small scale and flexible production in Denmark, we always find a way to realize our usually challanging ideas in actual products. So stay tuned. Reference I

is what the next Davone will be called. A successor to the Grande is long overdue. Considering this will be the best sounding Davone to date, the name is fitting.
